Baixa do Ferreiro de Dentro is one of Graciosa’s most accessible and rewarding dive sites, combining volcanic platforms with sandy bottom and a constant sense of open Atlantic presence.
The dive begins shallow, from around 5 metres, making it suitable not only for divers of all levels but also for snorkelers. In the upper section, the reef is alive with shoals of small, colourful fish, including kingfish, queenfish and yellow chestnut, creating excellent conditions for relaxed exploration and wide-angle photography.
Around 15 metres, the site opens into a series of natural rocky platforms where the action increases. Here, divers often encounter schools of pelagic fish such as amberjacks, jacks, barracudas and bicudas, moving gracefully through the blue. This mid-depth zone is ideal for observing fish behaviour and for ambient photography.
Descending towards the deeper section, down to 28 metres, the landscape becomes more dramatic. Large groupers (meros) are a constant presence, often resting near the rocks, along with dogfish, moray eels, palombetas, patruças and other reef residents. These encounters make the site particularly appealing for photographers, offering both wide-angle scenes and macro opportunities.
Currents can be occasional, adding nutrients and life to the site, but the overall difficulty level remains low, making it suitable for Open Water Divers or equivalent. During the summer months, Baixa do Ferreiro de Dentro also becomes a passage area for manta rays, adding the possibility of unforgettable pelagic encounters.
Versatile, scenic and full of life, this dive spot perfectly reflects the relaxed yet vibrant character of diving around Graciosa.
