Banco D. João de Castro is a large active underwater volcano located in the middle of the ocean. The last eruption occurred in 1720. Seamount -1000 meters deep, up to -12 meters. At the top of this volcano is a crater measuring about 450 meters in diameter, with a drop from -12 meters to -25m in depth. In this crater there is an extensive area with fumaroles of hydrothermal vents visible during diving in the form of bubbles coming from from the release of gases. Banco D. João de Castro is a marine reserve, responsible diving is important for the environment.
